SMET After-School Science Program
The EYC is devoted to helping students reach academic and professional success; an important part of this process is an understanding of the physical world around them! The Science Mathematics Engineering and Technology program will begin operating in the fall of 2008 at The Franklin Center and Goleta Valley Junior High.
In conjunction with faculty and college students studying science and related fields, students will be given the opportunity to explore the scientific disciplines of Physics, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry and Engineering. One of the goals of our program is to expose the students to the many applications of these disciplines and to cultivate a true passion for and understanding of the sciences. With that goal in mind, we have created a community wide network of Scientists, Engineers, Researchers, Tutors and Professors all eager to lend their knowledge and experience to the children. A credentialed teacher and experienced science tutors will guide students through this process in a real science classroom, at a ratio not to exceed 1:4. In addition, leaders in the field, such as Raytheon Vision Systems, the Marine Science Institute at UCSB, ATK Space Systems, The Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy, the USCB Physics Department and Santa Barbara City College Science and Engineering Department are willing to give us access to their facilities for field study excursions.
